London borough: City of London
The City of London, one of the world's most important financial centres, is located on Liverpool Street.
Liverpool Street is an interesting location to visit, since it is home to the London Stock Exchange, the Bank of England (with its great museum), and a variety of beautifully built skyscrapers such as the Gherkin, the Walkie-Talkie, the Cheesegrater, the Scalpel, and the Heron Tower.
Spitalfields Market, a short walk from Liverpool Street station, and the enormous number of superb eateries that service the well-heeled banking population are two more visitor draws.
Brick Lane, Colombia Road Flower Market, and the Museum of Childhood are all worth seeing in Bethnal Green, which is a little further out.
The towers on Liverpool Street may not be the world's highest, but they are unquestionably the most fashionable.
Take, for example, 30 St Mary Axe, often known as the Gherkin. This Norman Foster-designed skyscraper is entirely made of glass and offers over 500,000 square feet of the most up-to-date and ecologically friendly office space.
The Gherkin, which opened in 2004 and is 41 stories and 180 metres tall, was awarded the RIBA Sterling Prize for Architecture and is estimated to be worth £600 million! Standard Life and Swiss Re are two of the current tenants.
However, the structure is not accessible to the general public. If you want to enjoy panoramic views of the city from its 40th-floor bar, you'll need an invite.
Address: 56 Brushfield St, London E1 6AA
Spitalfields Market, situated east of Liverpool Street station, is one of London's best remaining Victorian market halls.
Every day of the week, themed markets are conducted in the central event space, which is ringed by approximately 50 permanent stores.
Spitalfields is a must-see for anybody looking for a fantastic breakfast, a bargain from a market booth, or the newest trend.
Since King Charles II awarded John Balch a Royal Charter to run a market on Spital Square in 1682, there has been a market at Spitalfieds. Following that, the neighbourhood increased in prominence, especially among weavers and craftsmen from the Irish and Polish groups.
Flowers, women fashion, posters and prints, art, music, jewellery, 5-minute massages, children's toys, and food and drink are among the items available at the 110 market stalls. Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Sundays are general market days, with Antiques & Collectibles on Thursdays and Fashion on Fridays. On Saturdays, there is a rotating schedule of jewellery, vintage, and record markets.
Address: 110 Bishopsgate, Liverpool Street, London EC2N 4AY
The Heron Tower is the highest of the bunch, standing at 230 metres (with its 28-meter pole) and 46 stories.
The Heron Tower (also known as 110 Bishopsgate or the Salesforce Tower) was designed by Kohn Pedersen Fox and completed in 2011. It provides over 50,000 square metres of fully-let office space.
The 70,000-litre aquarium in welcome is a highlight of the décor. The aquarium, which is tended to by two full-time fish keepers and a crew of divers who keep the glass clean, harbours 60 different species of fish in a sustainable habitat.
There are two excellent restaurants at the Heron Tower. SushiSamba is a combination of Japanese, Brazilian, and Peruvian food located on the 38th and 39th floors.
Address: Bartholomew Ln, London EC2R 8AH
The Bank of England, which was founded in 1694 and is responsible for issuing banknotes and determining interest rates, is the United Kingdom's central bank.
This is a fantastic attraction for kids. There are activity papers for kids of all ages, as well as puzzles and challenges (such as entering a bank vault) and other interactive exhibits. All those who finish their activity papers will also receive stunning gold-bullion pins!
Address: 20 Fenchurch St, London EC3M 8AF
The Walkie Talkie, or 20 Fenchurch Street as it is officially known, is the City of London's most accessible skyscraper. Rafael Vinoly's 34-story, 160-meter-high structure was completed in 2014. After Heron Tower (230 metres), 122 Leadenhall Street (called the Cheesegrater, 225 metres), Tower 42 (183 metres), and the Gherkin, it is the sixth highest skyscraper in the city (180 metres).
A vast sky-garden, two restaurants (the Fenchurch Restaurant specialises in seafood and seasonal game, while the Darwin Brasserie serves classic British cuisine), and three bars are located on the top three levels (the Sky Pod and City Garden bars, known for their cocktails, and the Fenchurch Terrace, serving fine wines).
Address: St Mary Le Bow Church, Cheapside, London EC2V 6AU
St Mary-le-Bow has a rich history, having been founded about 1080 as the London headquarters of the Archbishop of Canterbury.
It withstood three collapses until the Great Fire of London in 1666 entirely destroyed it.
Sir Christopher Wren rebuilt the church, only for it to be destroyed again during the Second World War bombing on London.
There are a variety of fantastic eateries on Liverpool Street, both high-end and budget-friendly, to suit all preferences.
Address: Liverpool Street, London EC2M 7PY
The Central, Circle, Hammersmith & City, and Metropolitan lines all stop at Liverpool Street Underground station, which is the sixth busiest on the London Underground network. It is in tariff zone 1 like other tube stations serving Central London. Except for the eastbound Circle, Hammersmith & City, and Metropolitan Lines, which have a ramp leading to the platform, there is no wheelchair access to tube lines.
Liverpool Street station, commonly known as London Liverpool Street, is a central London railway terminal and associated London Underground station in the district of Bishopsgate, in the north-eastern part of the City of London. The West Anglia Main Line, the Great Eastern Main Line, commuter trains servicing east London and locations in the East of England, and the Stansted Express service to Stansted Airport all terminate here.
After Waterloo and Victoria, both in London, Liverpool Street is the third busiest train station in the UK.
Norwich, Southminster, Ipswich, Clacton-on-Sea, Colchester, Chelmsford, Southend Victoria, Cambridge, Harlow Town, Hertford East, Broxbourne, and several suburban stations in north and east London, Essex, and Hertfordshire all have trains departing from Liverpool Street main-line station. A few daily fast trains go to Harwich International, where the Dutchflyer ferry to Hook of Holland may be boarded. Stansted Express trains connect to Stansted Airport, whereas Southend Victoria-bound services terminate at the airport.
